Nature Conservation, Responsibility, World, Hands

I will resume the travel challenge tomorrow for today I am just sticking to #BookSnapSunday, which this week is the Craig Reucassel book Fight for Planet A, an accessible and empowering read if you are looking to understand the challenges facing the planet, why the Australian government is so backward in acting to address those challenges and the things you can do to start making a difference. Any book on this subject that can leave you feeling empowered is a great read and this one does that. It is clear, concise and gives you simple actions to follow.

I surrounded the book with some quick props from our house, representing some easy, simple changes, like swapping out all the plastic products in the bathroom for shampoo bars, conditioner bars and soap bars, add a bamboo toothbrush and you are off to a good start. Switch to low voltage LED light bulbs and jump on a bike instead of into the car. Although looking at my bike helmet I must confess it’s construction with plastic and what appears to be polystyrene worries me in hindsight, but I won’t be replacing it. The greenest option is always to use what you already have!

On the subject of simple environmental changes, I urge everyone to switch to ECOSIA as their search engine of choice, it is the search engine that plants trees, check it out. Just by searching the internet using ECOSIA you can be making a difference. It is super easy to add the extension to chrome. Ecosia does not sell your data, or store your searches and ensures an encrypted connection, so they take your privacy as seriously as they take protecting the environment.

There are so many easy simple changes we can make to make a difference. Just by cutting our meat consumption we can make a big difference. Maybe 2021 is the year to embrace at least one meat free day a week or even better go vegetarian completely. Vegetarianism or veganism may not be an easy choice for many people but it is easy to at least reduce your rate of meat consumption. Have one or two days a week completely meat free it will benefit your body and the planet.

I must confess that while I love travel I do worry about the environmental impact of travel. I live in a country that has long distances that are poorly supported by rail networks, which makes travel a bit of a challenge. One of the surprising things I learnt from Fight for Planet A was how easy and inexpensive it is to offset your carbon emissions when flying. It is best not to fly but if you do fly, off setting the emissions costs less than a cup of coffee.

You know what else we can do? We can talk to each other, sharing ideas and supporting each other. Not everyone can go green over night and not everyone is always going to understand the science but slowly, bit by bit we can make the world a better place by sharing, encouraging and empowering each other.

Craig Reucassel’s book Fight for Planet A is also a great read for the Gaia/nature challenge, and is one of the books I managed to read towards the end of 2020.

#BookSnapSunday is a weekly bookish Instagram meme hosted here at Gum trees and Galaxies.com, if you would like to join in please feel free to leave a link to your post in the comments below. All you have to do is post an image of a book. Happy reading!

  1. Ecosia – what a great idea!
We have made a few swaps, such as to solid toiletries, Eco laundry ball and re-usable water bottles. I barely notice the difference and in many cases, I find the replacement products superior to the plastic packaged alternatives.
As Karen says, the way to change the world is one small action at a time.
