I am hopefully emerging from a bit of down cycle at the moment, starting to feel motivated/inspired to post more, in the mean time #BookSnapSunday gives me something to post for the week no matter what. I recently started dipping into Helen Macdonald’s collection of essays Vesper Flights so that is this week’s book snap. We were camping on the Severn river near Stanthorpe and I had hoped to catch some of the local swallows in the background but no such luck, they were way to quick for me and my phone but a nice setting nevertheless.

Macdonald’s essays reflect on nature, often birds, no surprise there but also other things, like the plight of refugees. The essays are often short but astute in their observation and eloquent in expression. I have quite a few to go, but I enjoy MacDonald’s observations immensely. So far one of my favourites is Inspector calls it captures a fleeting encounter between Macdonald’s pet parrot and an autistic boy:

They love each other. The bird loves the boy because he is entirely full of joyous manifest amazement. The boy just loves the bird. And the bird does that chops-fluffed-little-flirting twitch of the head, and the boy does it back. And soon the bird and boy are both swaying sideways, backwards and forwards, dancing at each other, although the boy has to shift his grip on the plastic sea lions to cover both ears with his palms, because the bird is so delighted he’s screeching at the top of his lungs.

I have only read the first ten essays so I will be dipping into this for the rest of the month of March I suspect, it is that kind of book. The kind of book you can pick up for a short change of pace or an interlude between books. Perhaps a quick essay before sleep, most of the essays are short which makes this a fantastic book to just dip in and out of, like the swallows swopping down at the water, dipping down and soaring back up.

Just a quick post today more to come on the weekend camping trip. #BookSnapSunday is a weekly bookish Instagram meme hosted here at Gum trees and Galaxies.com, if you would like to join in please feel free to leave a link to your post in the comments below. All you have to do is post an image of a book. Happy reading!
