Petals and Pups for Carnival of Flowers

Well it might be a rather quieter affair this year for Carnival of Flowers with the Queensland borders closed again but if you are able to travel to Toowoomba for one of its premier tourism events this might be of interest. The carnival of flowers is a big draw card for Toowoomba tourism and this … Continue reading Petals and Pups for Carnival of Flowers

Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

One of the major tourism events in our home town starts on the 21st of September. This year marks the 70th anniversary of this popular event. Toowoomba's parks and gardens bloom with masses of colour and the competition of the region's home gardeners is fierce. The carnival parade is held on the afternoon of Saturday … Continue reading Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

Spring Bluff: pancakes, history and a walk.

Just thought I would do a quick post on one of my favourite local locations, the old Spring Bluff railway station. Just a short drive out of Toowoomba to the scenic railway on the range, its like stepping back in time with the heritage listed station and its magnificent gardens and surrounds. The original station … Continue reading Spring Bluff: pancakes, history and a walk.

Pre-work coffee and books. Bony at Bermagui was another interlibrary loan, thankfully so, it is only 110 pages and a bit repetitive so not really worth purchasing. Has curiosity value, one for the die hard Upfield fans, contains a couple of essays about sports fishing at Bermagui, a short story, not Upfield' s best and a chapter from The mystery at swordfish reef. A quick read for the Upfield fan or anyone curious at sports fishing at Bermagui. #Bermagui is an incredible place, had hoped to visit the Sapphire coast this year but that is probably on hold for a bit. Incredibly beautiful piece of Australia.
The weather is ridiculous, bucketing down rain, flooding again down the range. Nothing to do but stay inside and read, besides it's been a while since I posted an Ada book buddy pic. Catching up on some Ukrainian history with Red Famine. #Bookstagram #Books #RescueDogs #RescueDogsofInstagram #DogsAndBooks
It's raining but I am in the bush so couldn't be happier. Went for a walk to the creek took Wendell Berry with me but a bit damp for reading. Still I did indeed rest in the grace of the world. Blissful solitude, back to camp, G will have a fire going. #CrowsnestFalls #Nature #NationalPark #NatureWriting #NatureReading #Bookstagram #Books #WendellBerry
I have been making good use of my work library (USQ) lately, with some surprising serendipitous finds in the collection and an ebook on Ukraine and Russia which I am reading for an Understanding Ukraine blogging event.
Inspired by @tiny_distractions post decided to track down a copy of #LaurieLee 's As I Walked out one midsummer morning. Just started reading, wonderful prose. Love the smell and feel of old paperbacks, books filled with nostalgia and promise. #walking #NatureWriting #NatureReading #Bookstagram #Books
Wishing everyone a peaceful Easter. Looking for an #Easter themed post had to show off the #AngelaHarding shooting star journal I have been saving. Harding is an amazing artist beautifully capturing the natural world in her prints. And she is responsible for some of my favourite book covers like October October and the covers for Raynor Winn's wonderful books.
A bit of a stationary post more than a book post. Do you annotate your books as you read? For me it is a bit of a an old student habit to scribble in margins or to underline and highlight as I read. Or to use coloured tabs to highlight passages in books that have been loaned to me, obviously don't annotate borrowed books. A few years ago I became aware of plastic waste even in my stationary but switched to some great alternatives, like the dry highlighter pencils by #staedtler, love using those. And I replaced the coloured plastic tabs with books darts, reusable little metal tabs, they look a lot more elegant than the old tabs and they last forever. While I have always preferred to scribble in pencil, I also decided to switch out disposable pens for fountain pens to reduce plastic waste. I started with a cheap preppy pen and still using it today I also picked up a cheap bamboo fountain pen and I love it as an alternative to plastic pens.
I seem to have a theme with my current reads , my non-fiction is Salt on your tongue:women and the sea by #CharlotteRuncie and my fiction read is The Island of Sea Women by #LisaSee an historical novel set during Japanese occupation of Korea. Only just started both but so far enjoying this escape to the sea, making me long for cold salt water and bracing breezes off the ocean. #WomenAndNature #WomenAndTheSea #NatureWriting #NatureReading #NatureBooks #Bookstagram #Books
One last bird photo from weekend at #QueenMaryFalls A gorgeous #KingParrot back at work after sanity saving couple of days. If I have learnt anything, it is don't wait so long before visiting again. #Nature #Australian #AussieBush #QLD #Bushwalking
