So today is national Eucalypt day, had to post at least one image of one of the many splendid eucalypts on campus. So many eucalyptus, I must admit I can only identity a few. The ubiquitous phrase "it's a gum tree" or " it's a Eucalypt" seems to do. This one is one our most common; a forest red gum. The fragrance of eucalypt is the defining fragrance of Australia. Mature trees like this are crucial to the survival of our fauna. Way to many are being cut down for development, and habitat loss is a rapidly accelerating crisis in our already stressed environment. Today's the day to hug a Eucalypt and breath in that sweet scent of home or better still plant and nurture a Eucalypt. #Eucalypt #NationalEucalyptDay #GumTree #Habitat #Australia

An overdue post: #HotChoc and a witchy read , B had an ARC of #Weyward by #EmiliaHart an interesting debut, some dark content; domestic abuse, rape, stillbirth but I bolted through it: 3 women at different times, Altha in 1619 tried for witchcraft, Violet in 1942 a Tom boy who would rather study bugs than be a lady and Kate in 2019 seeking sanctuary. "Weyward women belong to the wild.. And they cannot be tamed" I think I am a wayward woman, give me the wild any day. The ARC came in this hot pink cover with the published cover underneath nice presentation. A page turning read. Been a bit missing in action of late, busy time of year work wise and I rashly decided to go back to study, taking 2 units in the environmental science major. So at the moment a lot of my reading relates to study, not that much different from my regular reading really. Started dipping back into Rachel Carson's seminal work Silent Spring. Second picture shows one of my favorite t shirts featuring an image of Carson and the words: Be curious. Was surprised to note the library copy of Silent Spring is actually a first edition. Making good use of the library by sourcing textbooks there.
Been on a bit of a whale thing at the moment I started the year reading Soundings and I found Danielle Clode's Killers in Eden in the library and what a fantastic read it has been, a mix of natural history and social history. Documenting orca biology and behavior while also examining the unique history of whaling in Eden and the unusual relationship that developed between whalers and orcas. Fascinating reading a short but great read. Also pictured is Rebecca Giggs Fathoms The world in the whale another fantastic read on the subject of whales. I am hoping to visit the Sapphire coast this year including a visit to Eden really looking forward to that, in the meantime Killers in Eden has consolidated my interest in the region it's history and ecology.
