Benarkin Free Camping

An hour and a half drive from Toowoomba is the village of Benarkin and a interesting place to stay at their free camp site. Located on the site of the old railway station, now part of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, 4.6 kilometres from Blackbutt. The village itself is off the main road so is … Continue reading Benarkin Free Camping

Wallumbilla, and a quick stop in Roma at Walkabout Park.

There is much to be said for going where the WiFi is weak and where phones and TV are not an option, digital detox is always good for the soul, but back now, so I will start to catch up on posts. I planned a few days off work so we could travel to Carnarvon … Continue reading Wallumbilla, and a quick stop in Roma at Walkabout Park.

Free camping at Allora

The pod has given us the freedom to make quick weekend getaways, unfortunately I usually cannot leave work before 5pm on a Friday so that does put a little restriction on how far we go. The 5pm start is the reason we thought we would check out the nearest free camp between Toowoomba and Warwick, … Continue reading Free camping at Allora

Last weekend coffee and a good book while taking the girls for their morning romp in the park. Reading Kerri Ni Dochartaigh's strange memoir of Ireland Thin Places, part trauma memoir, part social history, part nature writing. Lyrical, mystical, hard to categorize but an enjoyable read. @davys.book.blog set an explore reading challenge and I can never resist a challenge, ten categories, will use this title to tick off 1. An author new to me. It also counts towards the nature reading challenge I host at Gumtreesandgalaxies.com
Afraid the #NatureSpotChallenge kind of got away from me but I did try to find time, I had a go at capturing the colour of the trunk on the lemon scented gum. There are some beautiful specimens on campus also picked up some of the lovely lemony leaves and tried to record the pinky Brown of the old leaves. I have learnt a couple of things: 1 don't overestimate what I can achieve on work days. 2 watercolour in nature journaling is not something to be afraid of and is FUN. 3 taking the time to really see colour and then playing around with mixing colour to do a spot is really relaxing, achievable and a great learning experience.
Coffee and a good book and what a book! Got this one for G but I have absolutely devoured it. We are both fans of the magnificent Terry Pratchett and this biog by Sir Terry's PA Rob Wilkins is a truly fitting and honest portrait of a man whose writing defined much of our lives. I loved reading about Pratchett's work habits, just a little writing discipline can go a long way. Surely no contemporary author is more missed than the wonderful, witty, wise Sir Terry Pratchett and this biography is a great read in it's own right, highly recommend. #BooksAndCoffee #Books #Bookstagram #TerryPratchett #Discworld #Biography
Escaped briefly to Stanthorpe just for an overnight camp just desperately needed some tree time. Too much people this past week. Nothing beats watching the ducks while cooking dinner on an open fire. Now plan to be offline for the rest of the weekend. #GraniteBelt #Stanthorpe #Nature #Camping #Sunset
My current reads: #Soundings journeys in the company of whales and a re-read Charlotte McConaghy The last Migration also published as Migrations. Reading Migrations for @oceanxbluess #RewildYourShelf nature themed book group. Really enjoyed #Migrations first time round, this time I found the audio book via the library so doing a mix of reading and listening. Soundings is adventure nature memoir, so far a good read, but more first person memoir than natural history. #NatureWriting #NatureReading #Migrations #EcoFiction #CliFi #Books #Bookstagram
A bit behind on #NatureSpotChallenge with@sideoats this is yesterday's spot. Had coffee in the Japanese gardens before work in the company of some muddy resident eastern long neck turtles. Hoping to get some time nature journaling with the turtles next week. Enjoying learning about watercolor so much I splurged and bought myself a little nature palette tin. #NatureSpot #HavingAGo #NatureJournaling #EasternLongNeckTurtle
